Float Trips

The French Broad River

The French Broad River is considered the third oldest river in the world, and one of the best smallmouth rivers in the Southeast. The river is in close proximity to downtown Asheville making it one of our most popular floats from the beginning of March to November. Most of the smallmouth range between 10-14 inches, but 20-inch fish that weigh up to 5 pounds have been brought to the boat. We offer half day and full day trips. We offer light spinning tackle trips as well as fly fishing trips for river smallmouth.

THE NOLICHUCKY RIVER

The meeting of the North Toe River and Cane River forms the Nolichucky River near the small community of Huntdale, North Carolina. This is an excellent float to target smallmouth bass on topwater lures or flies during the hot summer months. If you are interested in seeing explosive topwater takes, then this float is for you. Catching a 3 pound smallmouth bass on a fly rod or light tackle is something every angler should experience in their lifetime. The Nolichucky is the most scenic float in western North Carolina. We offer half day and full day trips.

The Tuckaseegee River

The Tuckaseegee River provides 5 miles of excellent float fishing. The Tuck is the heaviest stocked trout river in North Carolina. It’s an excellent trout fishery during the months of October to May. Our favorite time to fish the Tuck is during the fall and winter months. This is when fishing pressure and boat traffic is the lowest. The Tuck provides some of the best streamer fishing on any tailwater in North Carolina.

The Catawba River

The Catawba River is an excellent float that goes through two delayed harvest stretches. The opportunity to catch a good amount of stocked trout is best from October to the end of May. We catch the occasional smallmouth on this trip during the months of April and May which is always a surprise. This trip is best suited for fly fishing anglers looking to experience their first trip fishing from a raft.

THE CATAWBA RIVER TAILRACE

The Catawba  River Tailrace is a tailwater fishery below Lake James dam that provides excellent brown trout fly fishing from October to May. Turbines at the powerhouse provide essential oxygen and minimum water flows to the trout downstream which keeps them healthy. The float is 8 miles long so anglers will have multiple opportunities to catch hard fighting brown trout all day long. If you are looking to catch a “trophy” brown trout, the tailrace will be your best bet. The Catawba Angler only offers full day guided trips on this section of river.

THE TOE RIVER

The Toe River is a higher elevation trout river that provides excellent float fishing during the fall, winter, and spring for trout. The Toe provides some of the biggest fish we net each year. We are one of the two guide services that runs this stretch of river due to the technicality of rowing it. The Toe provides gorgeous mountain scenery and stellar fly fishing.
